Effective Cellular Manufacturing

Choose a Self-Contained Family

Dedicate, in one area, all resources needed to complete operations on this family. This step is necessary to pave your way to success!

Create the Physical Cell

If necessary, rethink processes, equipment choices, and even product design, to enable the product family to be self-contained and resources to be dedicated. Plan to locate all the resources needed to complete your operations in one area of the plant with a layout that minimizes handling between operations.

Education on Manufacturing System Dynamics

It is vital that both management and workers understand the relationships between (1) setups, lot sizes, and lead times and (2) capacity utilization and lead times. The difference between success and failure is basic education on these points.

Call for Volunteers

Create cell workforce through volunteers. This process begins when everyone in the company is given an overview of QRM and why it is imperative for the organization to embark on the QRM journey. This consists of education on some of the key elements of implementing QRM, including a vision of what cellular manufacturing entails.

The best cells are derived when organizational, technological, and employee issues are considered simultaneously. Implementing cells is only part of the story, however. To ensure success, the full road map for QRM implementation should be followed. Watch for this information in future QRM newsletters.
